Week 3 Early Waiver Wire Pickups

week 3
Week 2 is almost in the books and a little more light has been shown. Week One is always full of one week wonders but two waiver wire pick ups from last week are showing some consistancy. DJ Chark, Chris Conley and Terry McLaurin. Because of their performance in back to back weeks they should be owned in all leagues.

Running Back Waiver Wire Pickups

Jaylen Samuels

Jaylen Samuels
Jaylen is a must-add this week after James Conner injured his knee. All eyes are going to be on James Conner’s reports over the next few days as he left early with a knee injury but with waivers running on Tuesday you ave to make a preemptive move. Fantasy Football victories go to those who are the bold, not the timid. Jaylen Samuels and Bennie Snell as a secondary target are going to be the names to pick in all formats. The Pittsburgh offense has been offense has been subpar to start the season without Bell and Brown, and their injuries are starting to pile up. We should expect both to be used, but Samuels offers up more in the passing game and should have a slight edge in touches and snaps. The Steelers get the 49ers and Bengals over the next two weeks, which are premium matchups for the rushing attack.

Rasheem Mostert

raheem mostert
Mostert was a recommended add last week after Coleman's injury. Not many listened but they will this week as he outperformed Matt Breida in the statistics department even though Breida had an outstanding game himeself. Mostert was heavily involved on the ground and through the air, and despite sharing time with Matt Breida and touchdown vulture Jeff Wilson, he will be flex-worthy each week, especially in good matchups. An injury to Breida would propel him into RB1 territory.
We have seen that a Kyle Shanahan offense typically supports the viability of multiple fantasy running backs. We are going to see Mostert share time with the other two backs. Mostert's positive is that he had passing down work. He had four targets, and sported a 3-68-1 line. This is also in addition to the 83 yards on 13 carries.
Scoring 30-plus points in back-to-back games, the 49ers ran the ball 42 times on Sunday and the trio of Matt Breida (12 carries), Mostert (13) and Wilson (10) all had double-digit carries in their 41-17 win over Cincinnati. Mostert led the backfield in touches, gaining 83 yards on 13 carries and adding three receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown as well.

Frank Gore

Frank Gore
Once again, the ageless Frank Gore finds his way into fantasy relevancy by logging 19 carries and scoring a touchdown in Week 2. While Devin Singletart was the shiny new toy the fantasy football players loved to take a flyer on with his hamstring injury likely to last for multiple weeks Gore is a must own. As long as he’s the man in Buffalo Gore offers some unexciting flex value. Fantasy football players aren’t exactly big fans of Frank Gore as he is boring as hell to watch but numbers are numbers. Gore scored 15.30 half-PPR points against the Giants, totaling 83 yards and one touchdown. His younger counterpoint, Devin Singletary, looked very dynamic, scoring a touchdown and rushing for 57 yards on just six attempts. For now, Gore is very much a factor, especially on early downs. Remember: Consider Gore more of a week-to-week pickup who will have volume working in his favor, as opposed to a season-long asset.

Darwin Thompson

Darwin Thompson
Damien Williams left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury, and if he’s forced to miss time, Thompson is the likely backup to LeSean McCoy in the backfield. This add is purely speculative until the extent of Williams’ injury is known but owning any part of that score anytime from anyplace offense is worth owning.

Jeff Wilson

jeff wilson 49'ers
The touchdown vulture and in the short term in TD only leagues he has to be a priority add but less so in standard and PPR leagues. Wilson scored twice in the Week 2 victory, and it looks like he’ll get some work in an RBBC with Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida. He doesn’t offer a lot of standalone value at this point, but he does offer touchdown-upside with the possibility of a bigger workload should Mostert or Breida miss time while Coleman is out.

Carlos Hyde

carlos hyde
Hyde would probably be the starter this week if he had stayed in K.C and will probably be so in Houston going forward.  He looked good this week with 90 rushing yards and now has at least 83 rushing yards in each of his first two games and it looks like Duke Johnson is back to assuming his third down passing down role he held in Cleveland.  I wouldn’t bank on Hyde maintaining his early-season efficiency, but volume is king in fantasy football and the Deshaun Watson-led offense should be much more prolific in most weeks than they were this weekend, which gives Hyde RB2 weekly upside going forward, especially in games where the Texans are favored.

Wide Receiver Waiver Wire Pickups

DK Metcalf

The rookie was probably owned in deeper leagues already but now he is showing week to week consistancy and is worth rostering as a WR3 in all leagues. Against the Steelers on Sunday, Metcalf had three catches for 61 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown. In Week 1, he had four catches for 89 yards on six targets.
The Seahawks are a run first team  but the upcoming weeks against high scoring offenses look to provide some additional work for the recievers. Two of their next three matchups are against the Saints and Rams—two of the elite high scoring NFC teams, so Seattle may throw at a higher clip in an attempt to keep up with their high-powered offenses. In between those two games, Seattle’s Week 4 matchup should be a pace-up affair against a Cardinals team that will still be without suspended corner Patrick Peterson.

Terry McLaurin

mclaurin
He was probably picked up last week but if not he will for sure be this week, McLaurin had nine targets in the Week 2 loss against Dallas, posting a 5-62-1 line. He has 16 targets over the first two weeks, and he is easily the only wideout option you want in Washington right now. The snaps, targets, and fantasy production is all there right now. After his Week 2 follow up, expect more people trying to get him on their team.

DJ Chark Jr and Chris Conley

Chark
Both these guys were listed last week and both need to be rostered. Yje numbers speak for themselves.
Through the first two games of the season, Chark now has 11 catches for 201 yards and two scores. While I still prefer Dede Westbrook over both Chark and Chris Conley, it seems Chark and Conley have established a better rapport with rookie starting quarterback Gardner Minshew. The Jaguars are clearly not a friendly fantasy offense, but we have seen 13 targets in two games for DJ Chark, and he has been productive. With nearly 200 receiving yards and two scores in the first two weeks, Chark should garnish more ownership moving forward. Jacksonville’s passing volume is going to be limited, but funneling targets into Westbrook and Chark is a positive for them. He is going to be a fill-in option this early, but as we get into bye weeks and heavier injuries, he will quickly be a guy to slot in.
In Week One Conley caught six of seven targets for 97 yards and a touchdown. In week two Conley caught four of five targets for 73 yards during Sunday's 13-12 loss to the Texans.

Demarcus Robinson

demarcus robinson
One week after Sammy Watkins racked up 198 yards and three touchdowns, it was Robinson’s turn to post video game-like numbers (6/172/2). Mecole Hardman was everyone's favorite waiver wire pickup last week for added work with With Tyreek Hill out for a few games, Kansas City’s most productive receiver not named Watkins may vary from week to week although Robinson ended last season with touchdowns in each of the final three regular-season games. At a minimum, the fourth-year receiver should be one of the team’s top-three receivers in terms of snaps played, and that alone makes him worth considering as a speculative add in deeper leagues. Patrick Mahomes tossed four touchdowns Sunday, and his passing prowess shows no sign of slowing down even after getting banged up in week one. Robinson still has Watkins, Travis Kelce, and Mecole Hardman to compete with, but any receiver catching passes in this Kansas City offense is worth owning. Perhaps Demarcus Robinson's 172-yard, two-touchdown performance occurred as a direct result of the Oakland Raiders' poor pass coverage, but he's worth a pickup because of the Kansas City Chiefs' high flying offense.
In Sunday's outing, Robinson had a more impressive showing than Hardman. He's a safer acquisition as a fourth-year veteran in the league with one full year of experience playing alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Deebo Samuel

deebo samueals
After two weeks, it’s clear that Samuel is one of the top wideouts on this team, and Dante Pettis is not. In the end I'm not ready to give up on Marquise Goodwin but Samuel was involved early and often in the Week 2 win over Cincinnati, and similar usage can be expected moving forward. Wideout Dante Pettis didn't see a single look in the passing game—his most notable play occurred on a 16-yard pass to running back Raheem Mostert. Rookie second-rounder Deebo Samuel led the team with 7 targets, catching in five receptions for 87 yards and a score.
Through two weeks, Samuel has converted 10 targets into eight catches for 104 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion. With Pettis essentially nonexistent in the aerial attack (one target in two games), Samuel could finish the season as the 49ers' top wideout in receptions and yards. Deebo Samuel played 60 snaps in Week 1, but did not produce. In Week 2 his snap count was down as was expected, but he put up a 5-87-1 line. He has seen ten targets in the first two games, catching eight of them. The 49ers have been bouncing around in terms of snaps and volume for this receiving core, also working in the backs. San Francisco has a good schedule over the next few weeks, and Samuel is someone to add despite the incostistency in weekly performance.

Tight End

Will Dissly

will dissley week 3 waiver wire
Will Dissley came away with just one catch for 12 yards in week one but went off for two scores in Week 2. His production may be up-and-down, but it’s thin tight end field, and Dissly presents some upside with his scoring ability. As we all know, the tight end position in fantasy is one of the toughest to fill, unless you grab one of the big three in Kelce, Kittle, and Ertz. Out of tier two Howard has been a waste, Hunter Henry is out for a signifigant anount of time so when a tight end delivers a worthwhile performance and who also isn’t rostered in most leagues, we must pay attention. Dissly caught all five of his targets for 50 yards and 2 touchdowns. If Dissly stays healthy, he could develop into a fantasy option at tight end with upside when playing against defenses that struggle to cover the middle of the field.

Jason Witten

[caption id="attachment_41937" align="aligncenter" width="823"]jason witten Cowboys at Redskins 10/29/17[/caption]
I can't believe I'm saying this but with TD's in each of the first two weeks Jason Witten is a name to consider. It looks like he’ll be regularly involved in the Cowboys’ offense, and though he has a low ceiling, the longtime veteran should be added for those who need help at tight end and want a solid floor.

Quarterback Week 3 Waiver Wire Pickups

Teddy Bridgewater

Drew Brees got his hand smashed early in the game by Aaron Donald, leading Bridgewater to see significant action Sunday. It’s unclear how long he may be out. Bridgewater could be the starter in Week 3 and beyond, making him a priority add for those in need of quarterback help or Drew Brees owners. Getting thrown into the fire against one of the better NFL defenses Bridgewater performed adequetely.
***Edit*** With the news of Drew Brees torn ligament and surgery Teddy Bridgewater becomes a borderline QB1/QB2 for a number of weeks and is worth an add in all formats.

Andy Dalton

Dalton has been actually solid over the first two weeks of the season, totaling 729 yards, four touchdowns, and just one interception which is surprising given that they are without A.J. Green. Next week’s matchup against Buffalo isn’t the best but Weeks 4 and 5 feature exploitable matchups in Pittsburgh and Arizona with bye weeks approaching he could be a preemptive streamer. Dalton makes a solid pick up this week to get ahead of your competition.

Mason Rudolph

Ben Roethlisberger left early with an injury to his elbow, and his status for Week 3 is yet unclear. Rudolph played well in his NFL debut, and he’ll be the starter if Roethlisberger is forced to miss time. He should be totally unowned, so pick him up if you need help in deeper leagues or any league that utilizes two quarterbacks or if you own Big Ben.
